Restaurants and cafeterias in San Martin, especially in Tarapoto, offer a wide variety of both Peruvian and international dishes.
Being in the Peruvian jungle, the department of San Martin has unique dishes, which are incomparable in flavor, as most of the ingredients are native to the area.
As in other parts of the Amazon, among typical San Martin dishes are the "Juane", a tamale which is based on rice and prepared specially for the San Juan celebrations; and "Inchicapi" which blends the taste of peanuts, yucca, "mishquina" and chicken. This broth is so nutritious that a single bowl is sufficient to satisfy your hunger.
Other dishes worth recommending are the "cecina" with "tacacho" and bean "shirumbe". To quench your thirst, there is nothing better than a traditional "masato, the juice of fermented yucca, or a "ventisho".
