A good time to visit the cities and towns in the department of San Martin is during the celebration of San Juan, centered on June 24th. The Celebration of San Juan, honoring the patron saint of the Peruvian jungle, is the foremost celebration in this part of the country. On the eve of the Saint's day, the women prepare "juanes". On the 24th itself, whole families flock to the shores of rivers and lakes to purify their souls and give thanks for the gifts of nature.
Other good times to travel to San Martin are during Moyobamba and
Tarapoto Tourist Weeks, at the end of June and July respectively, the Celebration of the Virgen del Carmen de Lamas, where the Corpus Christi is re-enacted (July 16); and the anniversary of the founding of
Tarapoto, with traditional dancing and parades (August 20).
