The journey from Lima to Arequipa by road via the Southern Pan-American Highway takes about 14 hours. Bus transport companies provide non-stop journeys, with meals, air conditioning and comfortable seats.

Arequipa connects with other larger cities such as Tacna (via the Southern Pan-American Highway), Puno (though the road is in very poor conditions) and Cuzco (crossing through Tintaya). The cities of Juliaca, Puno and Cuzco are also connected by train.
