DAY 01: Puerto Maldonado - Explorer's Inn Reception at the airport, transfer to the office and then to the port to embark ourselves in a canoe with an outboard motor and travel along the Tambopata River for approximately 3 hours. On the way we will be able to watch caimans, turtles, aquatic birds, etc, and will take a cold snack. On arriving in the Explorer's Inn we will be welcomed with a cocktail. After a brief rest we will set off on a short hike to a small lagoon, from where we will continue towards Sunset Point on time to appreciate an unforgettable sunset in the forest. At nightfall we will get into the canoe again and will watch the caimans in the river with the help of torches. Once back at the lodge we will dine in the company of the resident naturalists who will be at our entire disposition to absolve questions regarding the Amazon forest and the Tambopata Reserved Zone. DAY 02: Explorer's Inn - Clay Lick of the Macaws At daybreak and after having breakfast, we will continue cleaving the Tambopata River for 5 or 6 hours, deep into the virgin Amazon forest and with great chances of watching the wild fauna. On our way we will go through cascades and interesting formations of basaltic rock, perhaps a gold washery, and sand banks where we can take a bathe if we wish. We will have a cold snack in the canoe and will arrive by late afternoon to the clay lick, consisting of a huge 200-metre wall where hundreds of macaws and all kinds of parrots come together, for reasons yet to be known, to feed on the clay rich in minerals, thus offering an unforgettable spectacle full of colours and sounds. We will camp and have dinner on a nearby riverbank. DAY 03: Clay Lick of the Macaws / Explorer's Inn Early in the morning we will repeat the experience at the clay lick, to then embark and return to the Explorer's Inn on time for lunch. We will have the afternoon free to rest or undertake an independent activity. If the level of the rivers allows it, we will go through a short detour towards another clay lick in a small river tributary of the Tambopata. DAY 04: Explorer's Inn Early in the morning we will have breakfast and then off we go led by a naturalist guide, on a 51/2-kilometre walk up to the Cocococha Lagoon. On the way we will have the chance of watching exotic plants and insects, butterflies, multicoloured birds, monkeys, and if we get lucky, even some of the largest mammals too. At the lagoon we will find canoes at our disposition for a short ride to watch the rich and variegated wild fauna on its shores. Back at the inn we will have a rather late lunch and the afternoon free to rest or undertake an independent activity. DAY 05: Explorer's Inn - Puerto Maldonado At daybreak we will have breakfast, to then embark on our returning trip and enjoy an unforgettable sunrise in the forest. In arriving to the City of Puerto Maldonado we will be transferred to the airport to catch our departing flight. |

WEATHER
The lower forest of Tambopata extends over the south of Ecuador, which provides a cold and dry winter between May and October, turning it into the best season for international tourism. The average temperature in Tambopata during the day is of between 82 and 93º F (25 and 31º C), while the average temperature drops to between 62 and 73º F (16 and 22º C) during the night. On the other hand, the cold coming from Argentina between the months of May and September drop these temperatures even further, to 50º F (9º C) during the day and 43º F (5º C) during the night. Therefore, one must be prepared for drizzles and the cold during this period; the rainy season is between November and April, and one must always be prepared for strong downpours that may go on for hours or even days. About 80% of the annual average of 2000 mm falls during this period; however, this average is a lot less than the average of 3000 mm of rain that falls in areas close to Ecuador. WHAT TO BRING It is advisable to have every visitor limiting their equipment to the following items: - Good binoculars - A camera with a lens of maximum 300 mm or 250 mm. - Loose cotton pants with narrow mouths. - Long-sleeved cotton t-shirts. - Underwear. - Small towels. - Bathing suit. - Spare socks. - Tall rubber boots. - Shorts. - 1 small hold-all. - 1 canteen. - Sunscreen. - Shades. - A raincoat. - Repellent. - Vaccination certificate for yellow fever - Small-denomination bills. - A waist-bag. LUGGAGE Lugagge is hand-carried from the boats to your rooms. We strongly recommend you to limit the weight of your luggage to 15 kilograms (32 POUNDS ) a piece. Those travellers visiting other destinations in Peru that need to bring with them other kind of outfits, can always pack different items of clothing in different pieces of luggage and bags, and keep those not needed safely at our offices in Puerto Maldonado on day one of our itinerary, so they may not be carrying useless weigh where it is not necessary, while at the same time we avert it from getting wet in the forest, and avoid overloading the boat. Your extra luggage will be waiting for you at the airport in Puerto Maldonado on the day of your departure. YELLOW FEVER INOCULATION REQUERIMENTS Yellow fever inoculation is required (mandatory) for travel to Tambopata. Get your vaccine at least 10 days before arrival in the jungle. You must bring your yellow fever inoculation certificate with you to prove to the airport officials in Puerto Maldonado that you are vaccinated. WATER Tap water in most of Peru is potable, but the chemical content varies from place to place. To avoid problems, we recommend you to always drink bottled water. COMMUNICATION The lodge has daily radio contact with the office in Puerto Maldonado, with a shortwave radio in each station. TIME ZONE Peruvian time is five hours past Greenwich Mean Time and is similar to Eastern Standard Time in the United States (except when the U.S. goes on daylight savings time from April to October). PASSPORT, MONEY AND AIR TICKETS It is necessary to carry your passport or ID with you when entering Puerto Maldonado's airport, since the arrival and departure of passengers is controlled by the authorities for being an international airport. At your arrival, a representative of our agency will collect your domestic air tickets to reconfirm your return to Lima or Cusco. Likewise, they will collect cash to pay for the airport tax; which is usually of 12 soles or 4.00 US dollars (for each airport). It is recommendable to carry some change to purchase sodas and beers, which are for sale at the lodge. MEALS We will provide all the meals during your trip, which consist of a starter or soup, main dish, dessert and tea or coffee. All the dry fruits are disinfected before being served; likewise, you will always have cold and hot water to drink at all times. If any traveller is on an especial diet, we will be glad to serve them, provided they have warned us with due anticipation in order to be prepared. ELECTRICITY Power voltage in Peru is 220 Volts AC, 60 Hz. Most modern electrical appliances do not need adapters since they will accept both 110 as well as 220 AC voltages. Please make sure to check the voltage options of those artefacts you intend to take with you during your trip, such as hair dryers, battery chargers, notebooks and lap tops, video cameras, etc. Most of these do not usually need a special adapter, but it is important that you make sure of that before leaving your country of origin in order not to have to buy special 110 V / 220 V AC adapters, which, however, can be found in the local market here in Peru. The Explorer's Inn has solar panelled based lighting in the common areas such as the dining room, but the guest rooms are lit by candles. Guests can charge their batteries in the dining room. Outside areas are lit up at night by kerosene torches. ALTITUDE Puerto Maldonado: 183 metres above sea level Tambopata-Candamo Reserved Zone: 200 metres above sea level. Be sure to try "Pisco Sour", Peru's typical mixed drink prepared with pisco, lemon, egg white and sugar.
