Handbook for Survival in the Rain Forest

How to build a shelter in the Rain Forest

First thing to look for is a convenient place. It should, if possible, in a high place, away from swamps and river banks, since you can be attacked by clouds of mosquitoes or even worse, the "manta Blanca" which is a very small mosquito, the size of a gnat and its bites cause a lot of itching. Generally the manta Blanca is most active around 5 to 7 in the evening as well as between 5 to 7 in the mornings. Do not ever camp on the open banks or river beaches, since there is a danger, not only being bitten by the above mentioned manta blanca but there is also a real danger of being attacked by animals such as caiman or big cats. (See Drawings 7a and 7 b).

Do not lie down nor set up your camp or
shelter where there is a presence of humid
earth or dry leaves.

Drawing 7 b

Do not make a shelter or set up a camp at the bottom of a ravine nor in the dry bed of a river, since heavy rains can easily flood the place in no time and pose a real danger to anybody in its way. This is the main reason for insisting on that you find a high place to set up your camp or establish a shelter. This will save you from a lot of potential trouble.

Do not make a shelter or set up a camp under a tall tree, they are generally very old trees and a sudden gust of wind can easily cause an old dry or rotten branch to break off and fall on top of you. Palm trees are also not recommendable to camp beneath since they have very shallow roots and can thus easily be up rooted and fall on top of you.

When you have found an adequate place to set up your camp or build a shelter, carefully cleaning off old leaves and branches using not your hands but rather a stick or branch since there might be snakes there. Please remember that the best camp sites are also the preferred places for snakes and insects.

Do not take your clothes off when going to bed, stuff your trouser legs into your boots and socks. Any body parts including your face that are exposed should be covered with mud in order to avoid insect bites.

Dig a an approximately 6 inch deep and 7 inches wide trench around your camp or shelter, to serve as a water drain in case it rains. Cover yourself totally with a blanket and if you do not have any blanket use the bark or fronds of palm trees as well as the natural cloth they form.

Set up your camp or shelter before the sun sets and while there is still light. Please remember that dark comes on quickly in the Rain Forest. Make a fire and sleep close to it, it will help keep biting insects and great cats at bay. You can also cover up in banana leaves, if available, but please pas them through an open flame a couple of times before using them, until they turn a brownish dark colour. This will assure that they lose some of their humidity and they will be easier to use. (See Drawings 7 c and 7 d).

Set up the camp site or shelter in
the early hours of the afternoon.
