he Festivity of San Juan Bautista symbolizes the purification of the water and the joy for the gifts of the nature. Those are days of reflection, but also of revel and joy that inspire feelings of fraternity and of union among the children of the forest.
For this celebration every city, town and village, get dressed of happiness the 23rd and 24th of June, to honor the saint that was chosen by God himself to be the patron of the Amazon.
The legend says that many years ago in a town that is a few kilometers away from the city of Iquitos
, a member of the ancient tribe of the Jeberos went into in the forest to "mitayear" (to hunt).
When moving away from his llacta (twon) he began to listen the sharp whistle of a paujil (a bird). He looked everywhere, but it was in vain because the bird continued whistling... and the whistle became a word.
The hunter could not believe it. Somebody, from some place of the forest, pronounced his name. Instants of fear and confusion that vanished when, among the branches of an old tree, he was able to distinguish the image of a saint.
The man ascended to pick it up and returned immediately to his town. He proclaimed it as a miracle. In the night, while he was sleeping, the image was revealed in his dream as San Juan Bautista (Saint John the Baptist).
The Saint said that he had been designated by God to be the Patron of the whole region and as such they should worship him, dedicating him a church. The orders of the image were accepted by the town. A church was built and there were big celebrations in honor of the patron saint.
As a recompense, San Juan, indicated the location of the best places to sow and determined the best time for the crops. Beyond the numerous legends in this charmingly mysterious region mysterious, the certain thing is that San Juan's religious party arrived with the Spanish conquerors and when coinciding with the date of the Inti Raymi
