THE FESTIVITY OF SAN JUAN

Holidays

Hours later, the party gets to its acm, overflowing happiness everywhere. Laughter, music and dance. Men and women taken by the hand dancing around the unshas or húmishas palms...

It is the night of the 23rd. The panorama is the same one at any corner of that immense green territory furrowed by mighty rivers that is the forest. People get ready for the party. It blows a cold breeze, it is the "winter of San Juan", the residents say.

The celebrations begin in the kitchens. In every house people cook the juane, a sort of a tamale of rice with regional condiments that is wrapped up in bijao leaves, a special plant of the forest.

There are different varieties of juanes. The yucca juane, of chonta, of hen, of pork, the chunchulli-juane, the demento-juane and the wasp-juane, this last one, when being unwrapped, seems to be a nest of wasps.

Close to the midnight they light blazes, called shuntos, in the main streets. The bonfires make up the darkness with their splendor. Their long fire flames, according to the beliefs of the area, are good to make lasting the love and the happiness in the marriage and at home.

San Juan's eve is favorable to predict the future. It is for that reason that the adults dare to foresee the coming events, breaking a fresh egg in the bottom of a glass of water. Travel, marriages, births, illnesses and misfortunes, can be predicted, when interpreting the forms made by the white and the yolk inside the recipient.

There are other beliefs that fill with magic and mysticism the night of the 23rd. They say that to observe the bloom of the figs attracts good luck; and that it is recommendable to make guard in the areas where money could have been buried, to glimpse the blued and brilliant splendor that would come off at midnight to point out the exact place of the treasure to extract it later.

In the morning of the 24th, the children of the Amazon go to close by rivers, puddles or cascades, to be given a cleansing bath. The waters are blessed, because San Juan has baptized Christ in the bed of the Jordan river.

Hours later, the party gets to its acme. Overflowing happiness everywhere. Laughter, music and dance. Men and women taken by the hand dancing around the unshas or húmishas palms whose braided leaves form a sort of crown, adorned with pennants and handkerchiefs, fruits, chocolates and gifts - with different colors laces.

Each couple gives a blow in the trunk of the palm. Who demolishes it, will be in charge of giving back "a new one" for the next year's party. Revel and furor, roguery that is shown in the verse of a very popular song: The women are as the partridge, they raise their polleras (skirt) and clean their noses.

The party seems to be endless and in some places it lasts until June 25th. They call it Sanjuancito. The important thing is to continue the celebrations in honor of the patron saint, to whom they sing: San Juancito of the big valley do not allow him to fail us overflowing happiness strong and abundant chicha.
