MANU BIOSPHERE RESERVE
The Jungle Treasure
The
Manu Biosphere Reserve, located in Madre de Dios and Cusco,
is an unique world of forest and areas of amazing beauty, where
thousands of fauna and flora species are living far from the
extinction danger caused by man. In this evergreen world, saved
from the civilization, the Jungle Law prevails.
This
is a strange atmosphere, with a forest full of strong and indefatigable
rivers revitalized by the "cochas" or lagoons. A complex
world where earth is protected by a shield of ferns, mosses
and huge tree falling leaves, and the landscapes are designed
by the savage nature creativity preserving the original inspiration
of its Creator of millions of years.
Nature museum, ecological window where it is exhibited the marvellous
"lazy bears" at the top of the trees, playful "frailecillos"
monkeys (dim monkeys) unaware of being in serious extinction
danger, careful "otorongos" (jaguars) looking for
their meal, and hard working ants carrying their leaves and
food. Normal realities at Manu Biosphere: a huge natural reserve
of about 2, 000, 000 hectares, a wealth bank of flora and fauna
where we can find a great diversity of species, one of the biggest
in the world, such as 800 kinds of birds, 200 mammals, hundreds
of fishes and almost a million of insects and other invertebrates.
In
this unusual greenness atmosphere we have some surviving species
like the "Cook of the rock" (Gallito de las Rocas),
considered Peru's National Bird, the "otorongo" (panthera
oca), the jungle king feline, the black "maquisapas"(ateles
paniscus), and the fast monkeys sheltered in Manu's trees.
And being here the man can be out of the routine. The nature
leads and controls. The Manu is one of the fewest places in
the world, nearly the only one, in which the natural evolution
process of species have not been interrupted nor required by
the technological development. Therefore, it has been declared
by UNESCO in 1987 as a World Natural Heritage.
