LIMA IN OCTOBER

History of faith

It is calculated that not less than 600 thousand people accompany the Black Christ in each one of his exits or "walks"...

It is necessary to go back in time. Place: Lima. Date: XVI century. Event: a black angolenian slave paints an image of Christ in a wall of his brotherhood in Pachacamilla.

Years passed and nothing extraordinary happened with the image that seemed to languish before the eyes of the few slaves that surrendered cult to it. But everything changed when on November 13th, 1655 a strong earthquake shook Lima.

Lonely and destroyed city. Lives, dreams and illusions buried by the brashes. The only one thing on foot was that image of Christ opening its arms to hold with love to those tormented people from Lima. Miracle! the slaves said. Miracle? the viceroy and the ecclesiastical authorities wondered.

The town began to surrender cult to that painting that represented crucified Jesus, to the Sacred Virgin standing next to the cross and to Santa María Magdalena knelt down to the feet of the Lord.

In 1661, Antonio León was interested in the image and built an altar to reinforce the base of the wall. This man had a malign tumor and every time that he visited the Lord, asked him for healing... His prayers were listened.

The Miraculous Christ's fame started to grow. The place became a small temple, they used to celebrate the Miserere (event in honor of an image of Christ) with harp accompaniment and the celebration of the cross.

Miracle? The Viceroy and the ecclesiastical authorities had their answer and decided to destroy the wall. Shock in Lima A terrified multitude came closer to observe the landslide of the image; then, a soldier went to complete his mission, but he could not make it. He began to tremble.

Same thing happened to the second and third soldier that tried to complete the viceroy's orders. Miracle!... Now nobody doubted anymore.

The first procession was carried out after Lima suffered another on October 10th, 1687. Feeling desperate, the Jesuit Father Alonso de Messia, decided to take out a replica of the image.

It was a brief journey, but the chronicles of the time say that the earth didn't shake again and that the restlessness of the residents ceased.

In 1727, the Pope Benedicto XIII dictated an ordinance for which he trusted the adoration to this image to the Monastery of Las Nazarenas, place where it remains until today.

Thanks to his miracles, the affection and the faith that this image painted in a humble corner of the old Lima woke up, it was named by the viceroy Conde de la Moncloa, as Patron of the city.

At the present time, the wall remains in its original place and the Limean people continue visiting him, to pray and to ask for help.

The image, since then, listens and irradiates kindness. It doesn't forget its humble origin even though now it has its own temple - Monastery of Las Nazarenas - and that to its feet millions of people of every social condition and race have knelt down.
