HEADING FOR MACHU PICCHU

Starting the road

"The Inca Trail that leads to Machu Picchu is, without any doubt, the most celebrated of those that exist in Peru and South America"

Adventure without limits that allows to walk on the puna (highlands), to walk on the edge of a cliff, to contemplate the magnificence of the twilight and to feel the excitement of coming closer in each step to the citadel of Machu Picchu, that Incan jewel made of colossal stones that was discovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham.

Every year there are more the visitors that decide to arrive to Machu Picchu walking the Inca Trail (near 15 thousand people a year). The reason is very simple: the itinerary is without a doubt the most hallucinating way to get to the citadel.

There are two possibilities to walk through the Roads of the Inca. The first route (known as the Inka Trail) - walking 40 kilometers in 4 days and 3 nights - begins in Korihuayrachina, in the kilometer 88 of the railroad; the second one, in two days and one night, departing from the kilometer 104 of the railroad. To venture in the Inka Trail, you must contact a travel agency (with special authorizations) that will offer you a service that includes transportation to the beginning point of the route, meals during the trip, camping utensils, porters (men that carry the backpacks) at a quite affordable price; besides the payment for the entrance to this area that is protected for personal of the National Institute of Culture (INC) is also included.

The road begins in Korihuayrachina. An Incan bridge on the Vilcanota river, is the first reef to conquer and it is only an indication, a small detail of that whole wonderful complex that extends along 40 kilometers. Wartiwañusca (4,200 m.a.s.l.) is an appropriate place to camp and to restore energy. After this rest you will descend until reaching a gulch and then you will ascend again by stone steps until a place where you will be able to see the Incan constructions of Runquracay and to arrive to the ruins of Sacyamarca, similar to Machu Picchu.

The Canyon of the Vilcanota river, is another amazing place. The roaring of the waters shivers the skin….. and at the end, drawn in the sky, the white lines of the snow picks seem to watch over that piece of the Andes that limits with the entangled green, typical of the tropical forest. Now the descent begins and ends at the "town on the clouds": Phuyupatamarca.

The expectation grows when you arrives to the ceremonial center of Wañay Wiyna (eternally young), kind of a sign that indicates that the end of the path built by the old Peruvians is very close. Maybe due to the fatigue, the heat and the satisfaction, the walker can believe that he is an authentic Chasqui.
