The city of Lima, founded by conquistador Francisco Pizarro in 1535, after many years of deterioration begins to recover its former prestige. Since 1995 municipal authorities have been implementing a successful recovery plan for what is known as the Historic Center, declared Cultural Patrimony of Humanity by UNESCO.

The Plaza Mayor or main square of Lima, with its fountain, is the oldest public space still preservad in the city. And it was this same square that was selected for the take~off of the rejuvenation plan for Peru's capital city.

With one of the most celebrated fiestas held in the past few decades, the present Plaza Mayor was reinaugurated on January 23 of this year. Because of its wealth of history it is a place every visitor must see. On its perimeter are Government Palace, the house of Francisco Pizarro; the majestic Cathedral ; the house of the Oidor or Hearer, and Lima's City Hall .
