Tarapoto boasts genuine tourist attractions only a short distance away. The Ahuashiyacu Falls located 8 miles from the town in the midst of dense vegetation, are a good example. Access is by land only, following the Tarapoto-Yurimaguas route for about 30 minutes. There are stairs and small bridges that lead to the source of the waterfall, at the top.
Lake Sauce (also called Blue Lake)

lies in the district of El Sauce, 10 miles away on the right bank of the River Huallaga, level with Puerto Lopez. To get there means a run of 30 miles that takes about two hours.
There are two and three-star hostels there, sited around the lake. In the dry season, you can also go by air, depending on the condition of the landing field. The flight lasts approximately 10 minutes.
