THE TARAPOTO ADVENTURE

Lamas

In the town of Lamas, 15 miles from the town of Tarapoto, the traveler can meet the Lamas indigenousto relate image in the multimedia gallery people - called Molitones by the Spanish conquistadors. According to legend and to historians like Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, these are the descendants of the Chancas who, on being thwarted in their attempt to take Cuzco - Imperial City of the Incas - fled to Amazonia to the place Garcilaso de la Vega called the "Kingdom of Muyupampa" where they took refuge from persecution by the Inca host.

Although the first town founded by the Spaniards in the Department of San Martin was Moyobamba, in 1542, the Lamas people were not conquered until more than 100 years later, by forces commanded by Captain Juan de la Riva y Herrera. Ever since then, the natives have resisted becoming absorbed by the local mestizo (Spanish-indigenous)society, keeping up their own traditions, language (Quechua)and race, in the Huayco section of the town. Visitors can see their typical houses, windowless to keep out evil spirits; they can try "metalillo", an edible clay eaten by the Lamas; eat other kinds of food and buy locally made crafts. Married women wear full skirts and blouses with hand-worked decorations, and during fiesta time the colors and the typical music combine to make a memorable display. When they celebrase the day of their patroness, Saint Rose of Limato relate image in the multimedia gallery , in August, the people gather in Lamas for a week of dancing, eating and, of course, sampling the famous drinks made with a base of cane liquor.

Lamas has a cultural museum where visitors will be given detailed explanations of local customs and history.
