For many, the Paracas scene means sea lions as these charming creatures have become a characteristic of the reserve. On the rocky shore and on the islands, these sea lions and "gatos marinos" or "sea cats" (lutra felina) play and, stretching out in the sun, raise their funny faces to the visitors who pass by.
There are several rookeries in the reserve, home to over five thousand sea lions. On the islet of Arequillo is gathered the largest number of sea lions (Arctocephalus australis and some otaria Havescens), concentrated at Punta Quemada. Although accustomed to spending most of theํr time on land, where these sea lions - very like seals - move clumsily, in the water they are magnificent swimmers.
In the evenings, the Paracas sky not only turns on sunsets with a magnificent blend of colors but also many varieties of birds fly across it.
