The trip to Machu Picchu begins at the San Pedro railroad station,. After a few hours journey by train, you arrive at the Puente Ruinas station from where buses take visitors to the citadel. Of course, for the more adventurous, the ideal is to take the Inca trail. In four days and three nights they can reach Machu Picchu, tired but happy to have had an unforgettable experience.
Doubtless one of the reasons why the Incas built their magic city in this spot is the lush vegetation of the place. Machu Picchu is strategically surrounded by a broad spectrum of greens, by crystal clear water fed into the Urubamba river all along its course, and by impressive mountains that are close to the traveler throughout his trip.
Surprise, even awe, are intense on entering "Old Peak". The archeological complex, clearly divided into agricultural and urban sections, rises in perfect harmony with its unique natural setting.
The first section consists of the arable terraces surrounding the city. These are of various types and dimensions and their function was to facilitase cultivation of the land and prevent erosion by rain. In the urban section are to be found the greatest number of Inca architectural remains, built wholly of granite. On observing them, the advanced construction techniques possessed by the ancient Peruvian are revealed.
